GLP-1 vs. Peptides: What Is the Difference, and Which Ones Work for Weight Loss?
GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide are peptides: short chains of amino acids. They are the best-studied weight-loss peptides by far. Newer peptides such as retatrutide and CagriSema are in clinical trials. "Research peptides" sold online, like BPC-157, are not FDA-approved for any human use. Whatever you take, the diet that protects your muscle is the same, and Sharpy is built for it.
People type "GLP-1 vs peptides" into search bars as if they were two different things. They overlap almost completely. Here is the simple version, then the full map.
The one-sentence answer
Every GLP-1 weight-loss shot is a peptide, but not every peptide is a GLP-1.
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks as the protein in your food. Your body makes hundreds of them, including the hormone GLP-1, which your gut releases after a meal. Drug makers built longer-lasting versions of that hormone. Those versions are the GLP-1 drugs.
Approved weight-loss peptides
These have passed large trials and are FDA-approved for weight management or type 2 diabetes.
| Peptide | Brand names | Receptors | Dosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semaglutide | Wegovy, Ozempic | GLP-1 | Weekly shot |
| Tirzepatide | Zepbound, Mounjaro | GLP-1 + GIP | Weekly shot |
| Liraglutide | Saxenda, Victoza | GLP-1 | Daily shot |
| Oral semaglutide | Rybelsus | GLP-1 | Daily pill |
Two more approved peptides are used for narrow situations:
- Setmelanotide (Imcivree) for rare genetic forms of obesity
- Tesamorelin (Egrifta) for excess belly fat in people with HIV-associated lipodystrophy
For everyday weight loss, the first four are the real options. Average results in the big trials: about 15% of body weight for semaglutide 2.4 mg in STEP 1, and about 21% for tirzepatide 15 mg in SURMOUNT-1.
Peptides in clinical trials
The next generation activates more receptors at once.
- Retatrutide (Eli Lilly) hits three receptors: GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. In its phase 2 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2023, the top dose produced about 24% weight loss at 48 weeks.
- CagriSema (Novo Nordisk) combines semaglutide with cagrilintide, a long-acting version of the hormone amylin. Its first phase 3 trial reported about 23% weight loss.
- Survodutide (Boehringer Ingelheim) combines GLP-1 and glucagon action.
Check the current approval status of any of these with your prescriber. Trial drugs are not available outside trials through legitimate channels.
One that is not a peptide: orforglipron, Lilly's once-daily GLP-1 pill, is a small molecule, not a peptide. It hits the same receptor in a different chemical form.
"Research peptides" sold online
Search "peptides for weight loss" and you will find websites selling vials of BPC-157, AOD-9604, ipamorelin and others, labeled "for research use only."
What to know:
- None of them are FDA-approved for weight loss. BPC-157 is not approved for any human use.
- The FDA has flagged BPC-157 among bulk substances it says may present significant safety risks when compounded.
- There are no large human weight-loss trials for these compounds. The evidence is mostly animal studies.
- "Research use only" means no quality checks for injection. Purity, dose and sterility are unknown.
If someone is selling you a peptide without a prescription, assume you do not know what is in the vial.
Compounded GLP-1s
Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide sit in between. They are the same molecules as the brand-name drugs, mixed by compounding pharmacies, often at lower prices. Quality varies by pharmacy, and FDA rules on compounding have tightened since the shortages ended. We cover this in detail in our compounded GLP-1 guide.
What every weight-loss peptide has in common
Whatever peptide you take, the effect on your eating is similar: less hunger, slower digestion, smaller meals. And the risk is the same too. When you eat much less without a plan, your body takes muscle along with fat.
The protection is also the same for every peptide:
- 0.7 to 1.0 g of protein per pound of goal weight, daily
- Strength training 2 to 3 times a week
- 80+ oz of fluids with electrolytes
- A plan for when you stop, since two-thirds of the lost weight came back within a year after people stopped semaglutide in the STEP 1 extension
Sharpy is the diet app built for GLP-1 and peptide users. It does not care which pen or vial you use. It sets your protein number, gives you a 20-minute strength workout, reminds you on dose day, and grades each day with a Shape Score from 0 to 100.
This guide is educational and not medical advice. Ask your prescriber before starting, stopping or switching any peptide.
Questions people ask
Is Ozempic a peptide?
Yes. Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, is a 31 amino acid peptide modified to last about a week in your body.
Is Mounjaro a peptide?
Yes. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound, is a 39 amino acid peptide that acts on both the GLP-1 and GIP receptors.
Are research peptides like BPC-157 safe for weight loss?
BPC-157 is not FDA-approved for any human use, and the FDA has listed it among bulk substances it says may pose significant safety risks in compounding. It has no human weight-loss trials. Talk to a doctor before taking any peptide not prescribed to you.
Do I need a different diet for a different peptide?
No. Protein first, small plates, plenty of fluids and strength training apply to every appetite-suppressing peptide. Sharpy uses the same framework whatever you take.
