Generic Semaglutide: Where It Is Sold and When the US Gets It
Generic semaglutide is now sold in Canada and India, and it is approved in South Africa and Brazil, but not in the United States. In the US, the FDA gave Apotex a tentative approval for a generic Ozempic in April 2026, which means it passed review but cannot be sold until Novo Nordisk's patents end, which Novo reports as 2032. Until then, the only FDA-approved semaglutide in the US is brand Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, and compounded semaglutide is not a generic. Whatever version you take, Sharpy helps you keep the weight you lose coming from fat, not muscle.
Can you get generic semaglutide yet? Yes in some countries, no in the United States. Generic semaglutide is on pharmacy shelves in Canada and India, and it is approved in South Africa and Brazil. In the US, no generic has final FDA approval as of October 22, 2026. One company, Apotex, has a tentative approval for a generic Ozempic, but it cannot launch until Novo Nordisk's patents run out. Novo has reported that its main US patent lasts into 2032.
Interest is climbing. On October 19, 2026, the data firm IQVIA published a new snapshot of how Canadians are switching to generic semaglutide. Here is what is sold where, what it costs, and what US readers can do now.
Is generic semaglutide available? A country-by-country chart
| Country | Status | First approval or launch | Products named so far |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada | Sold in pharmacies | Approved April 28, 2026; on shelves from mid-May 2026 | Dr. Reddy's, Apo-Semaglutide (Apotex), Sevmia (Apotex), Sandoz Semaglutide |
| India | Sold in pharmacies | Launched March 21, 2026, after the patent expired | Dr. Reddy's, Sun Pharma, Glenmark, Zydus, Natco, Alkem and others |
| South Africa | Approved | Sun Pharma approval July 15, 2026 (type 2 diabetes) | Sun Pharma |
| Brazil | Approved | July 29, 2026 | Owozy (Sandoz and Adalvo) |
| United States | Not approved for sale | Tentative FDA approval April 10, 2026 | Apotex (with Orbicular) |
"Approved" and "sold" are not the same thing. A company can win approval and still wait months to ship. Sandoz, for example, got its Canadian approval on September 18, 2026, and said it is still preparing to launch.
Generic semaglutide in Canada
Canada became the first G7 country with a generic semaglutide shot. Novo Nordisk's Canadian patent lapsed early after a required fee was not paid, as The BMJ reported, which opened the door.
- Dr. Reddy's got Health Canada's approval on April 28, 2026, and launched on May 15. It comes in a 2 mg pen (for 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg doses) and a 4 mg pen (for 1 mg doses), for adults with type 2 diabetes.
- Apo-Semaglutide (Apotex) was approved in early May and began shipping on May 19, 2026, also for type 2 diabetes.
- Sevmia (Apotex) was announced on June 30, 2026, as the first generic copy of Wegovy, for chronic weight management.
- Sandoz Semaglutide was approved on September 18, 2026, for type 2 diabetes. No launch date yet.
Health Canada said in June that it was reviewing six more generic semaglutide submissions, so the list will likely grow.
Generic semaglutide cost
| Version | Price picture |
|---|---|
| Canada generic Ozempic copies | Apotex said about one-third of the Ozempic price; Canada's rules push a second generic to about 50% of brand or less |
| India generics | About 1,300 to 4,200 rupees a month at launch, per Indian and Bloomberg reports (Novo's brands were about 8,800 to 10,850 rupees) |
| US brand Ozempic, self-pay | $199 a month for a new patient's first two fills, then $349 for doses up to 1 mg (TrumpRx and NovoCare, checked October 21, 2026) |
| US Wegovy pill, self-pay | From $149 a month at 1.5 mg (NovoCare, checked October 18, 2026) |
Canadian prices change by province and pharmacy, and you still need a prescription. Our TrumpRx GLP-1 guide has the full US cash price list.
Is generic semaglutide the same as Ozempic?
A real generic has the same active drug, the same strength and the same weekly dosing as the brand. A regulator checks that it works the same way before it is approved. So the Canadian copies of Ozempic should work like Ozempic, and Sevmia should work like Wegovy.
What can differ is the pen, the inactive parts and the box. If your pharmacy switches you, ask the pharmacist to walk you through the new pen and the dose clicks. If you notice new side effects, tell your prescriber. Our Wegovy vs Ozempic guide explains why the same drug carries two brand names.
When will generic semaglutide be available in the US?
The short answer: not soon, and no one has a firm date.
- Tentative approval. The FDA tentatively approved Apotex's generic Ozempic on April 10, 2026. Apotex called it the first tentative approval for a generic Ozempic. It cannot be sold while patents and exclusivity protect the brand.
- Patents. Novo Nordisk has reported that its core US semaglutide patent runs into 2032. Novo also holds later patents on pens and formulas, and it has sued generic makers. Those fights can push the date later, or a settlement could set a date that is not public.
- Pill form. No generic of Rybelsus or the Wegovy pill is approved in the US.
Is compounded semaglutide a generic?
No. This is the most common mix-up. Compounded semaglutide is made by a pharmacy and is not FDA approved. The FDA has warned about dosing errors, fake products and salt forms that are not the same drug. Recalls keep coming too: see our semaglutide recall guide and our compounded GLP-1 guide for how to read a label.
Buying from Canada is not a simple fix either. A March 2026 Congressional Research Service report says importing prescription drugs is still generally illegal for individuals. The FDA's personal import policy was not built for buying a cheaper version of a drug already sold in the US.
Generic semaglutide alternatives in the US today
| Option | What it is | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Generic liraglutide (Saxenda copy) | Daily GLP-1 shot for weight loss | First generic approved August 28, 2025 (Teva) |
| Generic liraglutide (Victoza copy) | Daily GLP-1 shot for type 2 diabetes | First generic approved December 23, 2024 (Hikma) |
| Brand self-pay programs | NovoCare, LillyDirect, TrumpRx | Cash prices from $149 a month, see our cost and coverage guide |
| Medicare GLP-1 Bridge | $50 a month for people who qualify | Open enrollment ends December 7, 2026 |
Liraglutide leads to less weight loss on average than semaglutide. Our Saxenda guide covers who it still suits. Which drug fits you is a decision for you and your prescriber.
Same drug, same muscle risk
A cheaper generic changes your bill, not your body. Semaglutide still cuts your appetite hard, and when you eat less protein and lift less, part of every pound lost can be muscle. Sharpy sets one daily protein target from your body weight and gives you one 20-minute strength workout, so more of the loss is fat. Our protein target guide shows the math.
The bottom line
Generic semaglutide is real, but it is in Canada, India and a few other markets, not the US. The first US generic Ozempic has passed FDA review and is waiting on patents that Novo reports last into 2032. Until then, compounded "semaglutide" is not a generic, and the safer savings are brand self-pay prices, insurance appeals and Medicare's Bridge program. Whatever you take, protect your muscle with Sharpy: one protein target, one 20-minute workout and one Shape Score a day.

Questions people ask
Is there a generic semaglutide in the US?
Not yet. As of October 22, 2026, the FDA has not given final approval to any generic semaglutide. Apotex got a tentative approval for a generic Ozempic on April 10, 2026. Tentative means the product met FDA standards but cannot be sold while patents and exclusivity still protect the brand.
When will generic semaglutide be available in the US?
No date is set. Novo Nordisk has reported that its main US semaglutide patent runs into 2032. Later patents and court cases could move that date. Be wary of any site that says it sells "generic Ozempic" in the US today.
Is generic semaglutide the same as Ozempic?
A true generic has the same active drug, strength and dosing as the brand, and a regulator has judged it equivalent. The Canadian generics from Dr. Reddy's, Apotex and Sandoz copy Ozempic and are approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. Pen design and inactive parts can differ, so ask your pharmacist to show you how to use a new pen.
How much does generic semaglutide cost in Canada?
Apotex said its generic would cost about one-third of the Ozempic price. Under Canada's generic pricing rules, a second generic must come in at about half the brand price or less. Pharmacy cash prices vary by province and store, and you still need a prescription.
Is compounded semaglutide a generic?
No. A generic is reviewed and approved by the FDA. Compounded semaglutide is mixed by a pharmacy and is not FDA approved, and the FDA has warned about dosing errors, fake products and recalls tied to unapproved GLP-1 drugs.
Can I buy generic semaglutide from Canada?
For individuals, bringing prescription drugs into the US from Canada is generally not allowed, and the FDA's personal import policy is not meant for buying cheaper versions of drugs sold here. Talk to your prescriber about US options such as manufacturer self-pay prices or insurance appeals.
Is there a generic GLP-1 in the US right now?
Yes, but it is liraglutide, not semaglutide. The FDA approved a generic Victoza for type 2 diabetes in December 2024 and a generic Saxenda for weight loss in August 2025. Liraglutide is taken daily and leads to less weight loss on average than semaglutide.
