**TL;DR:** Chinese GLP-1 ingredient makers are back in the news: FDA inspectors found black mold, insects and hidden paperwork at Chengdu Shengnuo Biopharm, and found that Nanjing Chengong Pharmaceutical put its own approval on ingredients made by other factories. Both firms supplied raw semaglutide and tirzepatide for compounded drugs, and FDA added both to its import alert for drug makers that fail quality rules (September 19 and October 1, 2026). Brand-name Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro are FDA-approved products and are not part of this story. If you use a compounded GLP-1, ask your pharmacy where its ingredient comes from, and keep protecting your muscle with [Sharpy](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/glp-diet-app-sharpy/id6762084138).

What is going on with Chinese GLP-1 ingredients, and does it affect your shot? **FDA inspectors found black mold, insects and hidden records at one Chinese plant that makes raw semaglutide and tirzepatide, and found faked quality approvals at another. FDA added both firms to an import alert, so their shipments can be held at the US border.** These plants made ingredients for compounded GLP-1s, the pharmacy-made copies. Brand-name Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro are not part of this story.

Bloomberg first reported the inspection findings on October 15, 2026, from FDA records, and the story spread through US outlets over the following week. Here is what was found, what the import alerts do, and what to ask if you use a compounded GLP-1.

## What FDA found at the Chinese GLP-1 plants

| | Chengdu Shengnuo Biopharm | Nanjing Chengong Pharmaceutical |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Chengdu, Sichuan, China | Nanjing, Jiangsu, China |
| FDA inspection | August 2026 (last one before: September 2023) | September 2026 (last one before: March 2025) |
| What inspectors saw | Black mold on equipment, "gross contamination" on floors, "significant insect activity" in ceilings | Workers bought ingredients made by other factories and put the company's own seal of approval on them |
| Records | Quality staff carried lab papers to lockers across the hall; samples were poured into sinks | Staff did not review the other factories' test results |
| FDA import alert 66-40 listing | September 19, 2026 | October 1, 2026 |
| Parent company | Chengdu Shengnuo Biotec | Nanjing Hanxin Pharmaceutical Technology (also on the alert since June 22, 2026) |

Michael Rogers, a former FDA official who led inspections, told Bloomberg the findings "suggest a serious accident waiting to happen." Chengdu Shengnuo said in a Chinese filing that it is fixing the problems. The reports did not link any patient harm to these two plants.

## Why mold and missing records matter for an injection

GLP-1 shots go under your skin, so the drug has to be sterile. Mold and insects in a production area raise the risk of contamination. Hidden or poured-out samples mean nobody can prove what was in a batch. And a stamp of approval on another factory's powder means the label may not match what is inside.

This is not the first warning about raw GLP-1 powder. In February 2026, FDA listed a recall of semaglutide powder for compounding from Harbin Jixianglong Biotech in China, because its process and endotoxin tests were not validated. Our [semaglutide recall guide](/blog/semaglutide-recall/) lists that recall and the pharmacy vial recalls that followed.

## GLP-1 from China: how it reaches compounded vials

A compounded GLP-1 is made by a pharmacy, not by Novo Nordisk or Eli Lilly. The pharmacy buys the active ingredient (the API, or active pharmaceutical ingredient) as a powder and mixes it into vials. Compounders must buy from FDA-registered makers, and many of those makers are overseas. A Brookings Institution analysis found that a significant share of the API in compounded GLP-1s comes from China.

FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, quality or effectiveness before they are sold. That is why the ingredient source matters so much. Our [compounded GLP-1 guide](/blog/compounded-glp1/) explains the rules in full.

## FDA import alert GLP-1: the red list and the green list

FDA uses two kinds of import alerts here.

| Alert | What it does | GLP-1 detail |
|---|---|---|
| Import Alert 66-80, the "green list" | GLP-1 ingredients can be held at the border unless the maker is on the list | Announced September 5, 2025. Covers semaglutide, tirzepatide and other GLP-1 ingredients. Names on the public list are redacted |
| Import Alert 66-40 | Drugs from listed firms that have not met good manufacturing rules can be held without testing | Chengdu Shengnuo, Nanjing Chengong and Nanjing Hanxin are listed |

"Held without testing" means FDA does not have to inspect each box before refusing it. The firm has to prove it has fixed the problems to get off the list.

One open question: some industry groups believe these two firms had been on the green list, but FDA does not publish the names, so that cannot be confirmed.

## Is my brand-name Wegovy or Zepbound affected?

No report connects these plants to brand-name GLP-1s. Wegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Zepbound and Mounjaro are FDA-approved. Their makers must tell FDA where and how the drug is made, and FDA can inspect those sites before and after approval. If cost pushed you toward compounded vials, brand-name cash prices have dropped a lot in 2026. Our [TrumpRx GLP-1 price guide](/blog/trumprx-glp-1/) lists the current self-pay prices.

Whatever version you take, the drug lowers your appetite, so it is easy to undereat protein and lose muscle along with fat. [Sharpy](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/glp-diet-app-sharpy/id6762084138) gives you one daily protein target, one 20-minute workout and a Shape Score, so you can see that the weight you lose is mostly fat.

## What to do if you use compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide

- **Do not stop or change your dose on your own.** Talk to your prescriber first.
- **Ask your pharmacy where its API comes from,** and whether that maker is on the FDA green list. A good pharmacy can answer.
- **Check your vial.** FDA lists red flags: a deep discount, no doctor screening, misspelled labels, a drug that looks different from your last fill, or a shot that arrives warm.
- **Throw out opened multi-dose vials after 28 days,** and use a new sterile needle each time, as FDA advises.
- **Report problems** to FDA MedWatch online or by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178.
- **Skip "research peptides" from overseas sellers.** They are not drugs for people. The same goes for retatrutide, which cannot be compounded under federal law. Our [retatrutide guide](/blog/retatrutide-guide/) explains why.

Our [tirzepatide recall guide](/blog/tirzepatide-recall/) shows which compounded tirzepatide vials were pulled in 2026.

## FDA's numbers on compounded GLP-1 problems

FDA updated its page on unapproved GLP-1 drugs on October 1, 2026. It says that as of May 31, 2026, it had received:

| Product | Adverse event reports to FDA |
|---|---|
| Compounded semaglutide | 990 |
| Compounded tirzepatide | More than 730 |

Some reports involved dosing errors, and some people needed a hospital. FDA says the real number is likely higher, because many pharmacies do not have to report. These reports are not tied to the two Chinese plants.

## The bottom line

FDA found mold, insects, hidden records and faked approvals at two Chinese plants that made semaglutide and tirzepatide ingredients for compounding, and it put both on an import alert. Brand-name GLP-1s are not involved. If you use a compounded version, ask where the ingredient comes from and talk to your prescriber about your options. Then put your energy into the part you control: protein, strength work and tracking with [Sharpy](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/glp-diet-app-sharpy/id6762084138).

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: What did the FDA find at the Chinese GLP-1 plants?**

A: According to FDA inspection records reported by Bloomberg in October 2026, inspectors at Chengdu Shengnuo Biopharm in August found black mold on equipment, "gross contamination" on floors and "significant insect activity" in ceilings. Staff carried lab documents to lockers and poured product samples into sinks. At Nanjing Chengong Pharmaceutical in September, workers bought ingredients made by other factories and stamped them with their own approval without checking the test results.

**Q: Are Chinese GLP-1 ingredients in Ozempic, Wegovy or Zepbound?**

A: This story is about raw ingredients sold for compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, not about the brand-name drugs. Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro are FDA-approved, and FDA reviews how and where they are made as part of that approval. Compounded versions do not get that review.

**Q: What is an FDA import alert?**

A: An import alert tells FDA staff at the border that they can hold a firm's shipments without testing them first. Chengdu Shengnuo Biopharm and Nanjing Chengong Pharmaceutical are on Import Alert 66-40, which covers drug makers that have not met good manufacturing practice rules. FDA lists Chengdu Shengnuo from September 19, 2026 and Nanjing Chengong from October 1, 2026.

**Q: What is the FDA green list for GLP-1?**

A: On September 5, 2025, FDA launched a "green list" import alert for GLP-1 active ingredients (Import Alert 66-80). Shipments of GLP-1 ingredients can be detained at the border unless they come from a facility on the list that FDA has inspected or evaluated. The names on the list are redacted on the public FDA page.

**Q: Is it safe to buy GLP-1 from China online?**

A: No. Semaglutide, tirzepatide or retatrutide sold online as "research peptides" are not approved drugs, are not made for people, and have no quality check you can trust. FDA advises buying medicine only from state-licensed pharmacies with a prescription, and using its BeSafeRx resources to check an online pharmacy.

**Q: Has anyone been harmed by these two Chinese GLP-1 plants?**

A: The October 2026 reports did not link any patient harm to these two plants. FDA says that as of May 31, 2026 it had received 990 adverse event reports for compounded semaglutide and more than 730 for compounded tirzepatide, and that the true number is likely higher. Those reports are not tied to any one supplier.

**Q: What should I do if I use compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide?**

A: Do not stop or change your dose on your own. Ask your pharmacy where its active ingredient comes from and whether that source is on the FDA green list, and ask your prescriber whether an FDA-approved option fits you. Report any side effect or quality problem to FDA MedWatch.
